What is Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)?

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is a colourless, efficient fuel made up of hydrogen and carbon molecules. It burns cleanly and easily, producing fewer harmful emissions than most alternatives. LPG is stored in pressurised cylinders, allowing large amounts of energy to be safely contained in a compact bottle and released as gas when needed.

Types of LPG

There are two main types of LPG: propane and butane. Both are considerably cleaner than oil-based fuels, producing fewer harmful gases and less smoke, a real benefit when working under strict emissions targets or near public spaces.

What is the difference between propane and butane?

The key difference is their freezing and boiling points. With a boiling point of -42 °C, propane works at very cold temperatures, making it suitable for outdoor use year-round. Butane has a higher boiling point (-2 °C) and becomes less reliable to work with from around 5 °C or below, so it is typically used for smaller, indoor equipment such as cabinet heaters.

Choosing the Right Calor Gas for Your Equipment

When choosing the correct gas cylinder, always check with the equipment manufacturer or supplier to confirm fuel type and cylinder size. When selecting Calor Gas, you should always be aware of:

Appliance compatibility: Always use the correct gas type for your equipment. Propane and butane are not interchangeable.

Regulator type: Match the regulator to the cylinder. Propane uses a 37mbar screw-on; butane uses 21mbar clip-on or 29mbar screw-on; Patio Gas uses a 27mm clip-on.

Temperature: If you are working outdoors or on unheated sites, choose propane-based equipment; butane becomes unreliable below around 0–5°C.

Cylinder size: Large cylinders are suited to longer, more intensive workloads. It is essential to check compatibility with the equipment you are hiring.

Safety Guidelines for Calor Gas Use

Working with Calor Gas is safe and efficient, provided you follow the standard UK gas safety rules. Because LPG is a high-intensity fuel stored under pressure, it requires professional handling on every job site. Here’s how to handle Calor Gas safely:

Keep it Upright: Always store and use your bottles standing up. If they’re on their side, you’ll draw liquid into the regulator, which can damage your tools and cause a safety risk.

Watch the Low Spots: Gas is heavier than air. If there’s a leak, it won’t float away; it will sink into drains, pits, or basements. Never use or store gas in these areas.

Match Your Gear: You can’t swap regulators between gas types. Red (Propane) and Blue (Butane) bottles use different fittings and operate at different pressures. Always double-check you’ve got the right match.

Protect Your Hands: Wear gloves when changing bottles. If liquid gas hits your skin, it can cause freeze burns instantly.

Exchange, Don’t Refill: Never try to refill a Calor bottle yourself; it’s illegal and dangerous. Just bring your empty back to us at the Kent depot, and we’ll swap it for a safe, factory-filled replacement.

 

The Calor Cylinder Refill Agreement (CRA)

The Cylinder Refill Agreement (CRA) allows you to exchange empty gas bottles for full ones through Calor’s stockist network.

How does a Calor Gas refill work?

When you take a Calor cylinder, you pay a deposit for the bottle. The cylinder remains Calor’s property, and you exchange it when empty rather than refilling it. This can be done at any Calor stockist, including our Kent depot. If you no longer need the cylinder, return it to any Calor dealer and claim back part of your deposit; 50% after one year, 25% after two years.
